Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved a comprehensive support package for Deltans evacuated from South Africa following the recent xenophobic attacks.
As part of the intervention, each affected family will receive a ₦2 million grant, while returnees will be placed on monthly welfare allowances to support their reintegration into society.
Under the package, every returnee will receive a monthly stipend of ₦200,000, while each affected family will be paid ₦300,000 monthly. The payments will begin in August 2026 and continue until the end of the governor’s first term on May 29, 2027.
Governor Oborevwori made the announcement during a reception for the returnees held on Friday at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba. Represented by his Chief of Staff, Johnson Erijo, the governor condemned the xenophobic attacks, describing them as a grave violation of human dignity.
He stressed that no individual should be subjected to violence, harassment or discrimination because of their nationality, and expressed sympathy to the victims for the physical, emotional and economic hardships they suffered.
To further support the returnees, the governor directed that they receive free medical examinations at all state-owned health facilities. He also instructed the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Services to provide trauma counselling and psychosocial support for the victims and their families.
Oborevwori urged Deltans to receive the returnees with compassion, unity and kindness, noting that these values reflect the true spirit of the state.
He assured the victims that the painful experience would not define their future and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating opportunities for all residents while continuing to advocate for the protection of the rights and dignity of Nigerians living abroad.
