The Presidency has confirmed that the pupils and teachers rescued from captivity in Oriire community, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, are currently undergoing medical examinations before being handed over to the Oyo State Government.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this on Saturday while responding to questions on whether the rescued victims would be presented to President Bola Tinubu.
According to him, information from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) indicates that the victims will be released into the care of Governor Seyi Makinde after completing medical evaluations.
“The children are still undergoing medical examination. They will thereafter be handed over to Oyo Governor Makinde,” Onanuga said.
Earlier, President Tinubu expressed delight over the successful rescue operation, commending the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force for their coordinated efforts.
The President noted that security operatives worked tirelessly for 56 days to secure the release of the abducted pupils and teachers without casualties. He also praised the operation for leading to the arrest of eight suspected abductors while several others were neutralised.
Tinubu acknowledged the trauma endured by the victims, their families, and the nation throughout the period of captivity, assuring Nigerians that those responsible for the crime would face justice.
“My government will get justice for these children and their teachers, as well as for the family of Mr. Oyedokun, who the terrorists gruesomely murdered,” the President said.
He also commended the Oyo State Government for its collaboration with the Federal Government throughout the rescue efforts and urged the state to strengthen security around schools.
“I must commend the Government of Oyo State for working cooperatively with us in bringing this unfortunate incident to a successful end,” Tinubu stated.
