The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has urged Nigerians and organisations to patronise locally developed digital solutions to promote economic growth, strengthen data sovereignty and improve the country’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
Oyedele made the call on Monday in Abuja during a courtesy visit to Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB).
The minister urged Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s “Buy Nigeria, Make Nigeria” initiative by patronising locally developed software, hardware and other digital infrastructure.
According to him, increased adoption of indigenous technology would help strengthen Nigeria’s data sovereignty while creating opportunities for local technology providers and contributing to economic development.
Oyedele said some Nigerian organisations that had adopted locally developed technologies found them to be more affordable while maintaining high quality.
He said Nigeria had little justification for failing to maximise the opportunities presented by the digital economy, stressing the need for deliberate efforts to develop the sector.
According to the minister, the digital economy remains a key component of the Federal Government’s economic growth agenda and requires sustained investment in infrastructure, innovation and indigenous technology.
He also assured Galaxy Backbone of the government’s continued support towards strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure.
“Many organisations, particularly in the private sector, still rely heavily on foreign suppliers, despite the availability of capable Nigerian technology providers.
“Digital infrastructure is critical. As a country, we must be intentional in making that investment,” Oyedele said.
