Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed gratitude following the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area, describing their safe return as a moment of relief and thanksgiving for the state.
The governor made the remarks during a visit to the rescued victims at the Headquarters of the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services, Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, where they are receiving medical treatment after regaining their freedom.
Makinde disclosed that all 39 abducted pupils and five of the seven teachers had been rescued and reunited with security personnel. He thanked God for the successful operation and commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their commitment to securing the victims’ release.
He, however, noted that the operation came at a cost, revealing that some security personnel lost their lives during the rescue mission. The governor extended his condolences to their families, assuring them that the sacrifices of the fallen officers would not be forgotten.
Speaking on the condition of the victims, Makinde said they were delighted to be free but acknowledged that some appeared physically weak and would require medical attention and psychosocial support to recover from the trauma of their captivity.
According to the governor, the rescued pupils and teachers will remain under medical observation for 48 hours before a comprehensive assessment is carried out. They will then be formally handed over by the military authorities to the Oyo State Government for further care and rehabilitation.
Makinde also revealed that arrangements were underway to reunite the victims with their families, highlighting the case of a young girl who had repeatedly requested to see her mother since her rescue.
He urged Nigerians to remain united in confronting the country’s security challenges, stressing that periods of adversity should strengthen national resolve rather than create division.
The governor added that he would brief the people of Oyo State and Nigerians next week on the circumstances surrounding the abduction and the efforts that led to the successful rescue.
Makinde further clarified that no ransom was paid and no concessions were made to the kidnappers. He disclosed that a notorious gang leader whose release had been demanded by the abductors remains in custody and is facing prosecution for alleged offences.
