The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the public display of the personal particulars and credentials of candidates nominated by political parties for the 2027 General Election.
The exercise, which began on Saturday, is in compliance with the Electoral Act, 2026, and forms part of the Commission’s revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election. It covers candidates seeking elective offices, including those contesting the January 16, 2027, presidential election.
According to a statement issued by INEC, the publication of candidates’ particulars took place at the Commission’s State Head Office in Abuja and simultaneously across the six Area Council offices of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The exercise is aimed at promoting transparency by allowing members of the public to scrutinise the credentials and other documents submitted by candidates.
Speaking on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), FCT, the Administrative Secretary, Bimbo Oladunjoye, said the exercise is a statutory requirement under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026. She explained that the law mandates INEC to display the personal particulars, affidavits and other relevant documents of candidates in the constituencies where they intend to contest.
Oladunjoye noted that the display covers presidential and National Assembly candidates contesting elections in the FCT and is being conducted simultaneously across all INEC offices in the six Area Councils to ensure public access.
She described the exercise as a key component of the electoral process, saying it promotes openness, accountability and public confidence. She urged citizens, political parties, civil society organisations, the media and other stakeholders to examine the displayed documents carefully.
Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to a credible electoral process, Oladunjoye said INEC remains on schedule with preparations for the 2027 General Election.
“The Commission is on course with its preparations for the 2027 General Elections and will continue to carry out every stage of the electoral process in accordance with the Constitution, the Electoral Act, 2026, and the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines,” she said.
