Former Anambra State governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has said Nigeria’s most urgent reform is a transformation of its leadership, arguing that the country’s progress depends largely on the character, competence, capacity and commitment of those entrusted with public office.
Obi made the statement in a post on his official X account on Monday following a meeting with a group of young Nigerian professionals in Washington, DC.
The group comprised medical doctors and other healthcare professionals, educators, lawyers, engineers, technology experts, entrepreneurs and business leaders.
According to Obi, the discussion focused on good governance, the challenges facing Nigeria and the urgent reforms required to move the country forward.
He said while economic, political and institutional reforms remained important, leadership reform was the foundation for achieving sustainable progress.
“No nation can rise above the character, competence, capacity, and commitment of those entrusted with its leadership,” Obi said.
The former governor maintained that Nigeria had the human and natural resources required to achieve rapid development but had suffered for too long from a leadership deficit.
“Nigeria is blessed. We are not lacking in intelligent people. We are not lacking in natural resources. We are not lacking in hardworking and innovative young people,” he said.
According to him, Nigeria needs leaders who genuinely prioritise citizens and regard public resources as a responsibility entrusted to them.
“We need leadership that strengthens our institutions, invests seriously in education and healthcare, supports businesses and entrepreneurs, creates jobs and opportunities for our young people, and gives every Nigerian a reason to believe that hard work can still lead to a better life,” Obi said.
Obi Highlights Diaspora’s Role
Obi also highlighted the contribution of Nigerians living abroad, describing the diaspora as an important partner in the country’s development.
He said his interaction with the professionals in Washington reinforced his belief in the capacity of Nigerians around the world to contribute meaningfully to national development.
“Meeting these young Nigerians in Washington once again reminded me of the extraordinary talent our country has produced,” he said.
Obi noted that Nigerians were making significant contributions globally in fields including medicine, technology, engineering, law, education and business.
“Our diaspora should never be seen as people who have simply left Nigeria. They remain an important part of Nigeria and must be partners in rebuilding our country,” he added.
He said Nigeria must create an environment where young people could pursue their ambitions without being forced to leave the country, while also encouraging Nigerians abroad to return, invest and participate in national development.
“We must build a Nigeria where our young people do not have to leave their country in order to fulfil their dreams, and where those already abroad can confidently return, invest, contribute and participate in our national development,” Obi said.
‘That Nigeria Is Possible’
The former governor said achieving a better Nigeria would require deliberate action, responsible leadership and active participation from citizens.
“That Nigeria is possible. But it will not happen by accident,” he said.
He called for responsible and compassionate leadership, stronger institutions and prudent management of the country’s resources, while urging citizens to remain committed to rebuilding Nigeria.
His comments come amid heightened political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election, with Obi emerging as a prominent opposition figure following his move from the Labour Party to the ADC.
Obi formally registered with the ADC in March 2026 after joining the party in December 2025, as opposition politicians continue efforts to build a stronger platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
