The senator representing Kaduna South, Sunday Katung, has appealed for calm following the tragic death of Mary Habila, urging the public to respect her family’s wishes as they grieve.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Media Adviser, Midat Joseph, Katung called on citizens to exercise restraint and avoid comments or actions capable of escalating tensions or disrupting public peace.
He acknowledged the grief and emotions surrounding the incident but stressed that they should not result in actions that could endanger lives, undermine public order, or interfere with due process.
The lawmaker also appealed for respect for the family’s desire to mourn privately and lay their daughter to rest with dignity, noting that they had made it clear they did not want intrusion or recrimination arising from the tragedy.
Katung said his appeal also extended to his colleagues in the National Assembly and the many well-wishers within and outside Nigeria who had reached out seeking answers.
Describing Mary’s death as a heartbreaking loss, the senator said it had left her family, friends, and the people of Kaduna South in deep mourning. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the repose of her soul and for God to grant them the strength to bear the loss.
He expressed confidence that the relevant authorities would, where necessary, carry out a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death in accordance with the law, so that the truth is established and justice served. He added that the family’s wishes and feelings should be respected throughout the process.
Katung further disclosed that he had assured Mary’s parents of his commitment to ensuring they receive fair treatment and that every lawful effort would be made to help them obtain the closure they seek.
Mary Habila was a member of the medical team accompanying the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to his hometown of Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where she was allegedly found dead within the minister’s residential compound.
