President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s latest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures, describing the 4.43 per cent growth recorded in the second quarter of 2026 as encouraging.
The President also assured Nigerians that his administration would continue working to strengthen economic performance and ensure that the benefits of ongoing reforms reach citizens across the country.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the President’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that Nigeria’s GDP grew by 4.43 per cent in Q2 2026, compared with 4.23 per cent recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2025.
The latest report showed growth across key sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and services, which remained the largest contributor to the nation’s overall GDP.
In nominal terms, Nigeria’s aggregate GDP rose to ₦119.27 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, representing an 18.43 per cent increase from the ₦100.7 trillion recorded in Q2 2025.
Reacting to the figures, Tinubu said the latest economic performance came at a critical time, particularly as opposition parties continue to criticise his administration’s policies and have pledged to reverse some of the reforms if elected.
The President said his administration had spent the past three years implementing difficult but necessary reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and laying the foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity.
“In the past three years, we tried to do the hard part by implementing the necessary reforms to stabilise the economy. Now the economy is stabilised, and we have laid the foundation for a prosperous nation. We didn’t do the reforms to create challenges, but to ensure prosperity reaches all our people,” Tinubu said.
He said the results of the reforms were becoming increasingly evident, citing Nigeria’s trade surplus, stronger foreign reserves and improved credit rating as signs of economic progress.
“The results of the efforts are becoming very clear to all: The Renewed Hope Agenda is working. Because of those tough decisions, today Nigeria has trade surpluses. Our foreign reserves are at their highest in 17 years. Our credit rating has moved up several notches,” the President said.
Tinubu also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including roads, railways and superhighways, saying they were being developed to serve the country for decades.
He added that investors who previously left Nigeria were beginning to return, while oil and gas production was increasing.
According to the President, his administration had also recorded progress in the education sector, noting that Nigerian universities had remained largely free from strikes.
“And in our universities – for the first time in a long time – there are no strikes. Our children are in class. And through NELFUND, student loans are putting education within reach, and affordable credit is going to our civil servants through Creditcorp.”
Tinubu further disclosed that his administration would, in the coming weeks, intensify efforts to address challenges facing vulnerable Nigerians.
He said the measures would include providing cheaper transportation options, increasing food production and rolling out relief programmes targeted at communities at the grassroots.
“In the next few weeks, we are addressing some of the challenges being faced by our vulnerable population by providing cheaper means of transport, ramping up food production and implementing various relief programmes that will touch lives at the grassroots,” Tinubu said.
