The Senator representing Kaduna South, Sunday Katung, has appealed for calm following the tragic death of Mary Habila, urging the public to respect the wishes of her family during this difficult period.
In a statement issued on Saturday through his Media Adviser, Midat Joseph, Katung called on citizens to exercise restraint and avoid actions or comments capable of escalating tensions or disrupting public peace.
He acknowledged the grief and emotions surrounding the incident but stressed that they should not lead to actions that could endanger lives, undermine public order, or interfere with due process.
The senator also appealed to the public to honour the family’s request for privacy as they mourn and lay their daughter to rest with dignity. According to him, the family has made it clear that it does not want intrusion or recrimination arising from the tragedy.
Katung said his appeal extends to his colleagues in the National Assembly, as well as the many sympathisers within and outside Nigeria who have reached out seeking information about the incident.
Expressing deep sorrow over Mary’s death, the lawmaker described it as a heartbreaking loss that has left her family, friends, and the Kaduna South community in mourning.
He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, praying for the peaceful repose of her soul and for God to grant her loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
The senator also expressed confidence that the relevant authorities would, where necessary, carry out a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, in accordance with the law, to establish the truth and ensure justice is served.
He emphasised that the wishes and feelings of the bereaved family should remain central throughout the process.
Katung further disclosed that he had assured Mary’s parents of his office’s commitment to ensuring they receive fair treatment and that every lawful effort would be made to help them obtain the closure they seek.
Mary Habila was a member of the medical team accompanying the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to his hometown of Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where she was reportedly found dead within his residential compound.
