The Federal Government has said it has no plans to increase electricity tariffs in the country.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during a media briefing to mark his first 100 days in office, covering the period from June 8 to September 16.
Tegbe said he received several calls over the weekend following reports that the Federal Government was planning to increase electricity tariffs.
He dismissed the reports as politically motivated ahead of next year’s general elections, stressing that the administration’s priority is to improve electricity supply to Nigerians.
According to the minister, the government is exploring renewable energy solutions while conducting a comprehensive audit of power infrastructure nationwide to identify critical gaps and address them.
Tegbe’s comments come amid ongoing concerns over the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s electricity market and the future of government support for the sector.
The minister acknowledged that the power sector faces challenges across the entire value chain, stressing that the problems are interconnected and cannot be resolved simply by increasing electricity generation.
He said the government is therefore pursuing a broader approach aimed at addressing weaknesses across the power sector and improving reliable electricity supply to consumers.
