Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Saturday said the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, has intensified efforts to secure the safe release of worshippers abducted in Dekara, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
Disu spoke during a visit to the Niger State Police Command, where he reviewed the security situation in the state, assessed ongoing operations and provided additional operational support to the command.
The IGP said the visit was aimed at strengthening efforts to rescue the abducted worshippers and identifying practical solutions to the operational challenges confronting security personnel in the state.
He condemned the abduction, stressing that the country remained deeply concerned about the safe and speedy release of the victims.
Disu disclosed that the police had deployed tactical and counter-terrorism teams, the Special Intervention Squad and Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel as part of the ongoing operation to rescue the victims and restore security in affected communities.
He warned that attacks on innocent citizens have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only public safety but also economic activities and development in Niger State and the country at large.
The IGP charged officers and men of the Niger State Command to remain vigilant, proactive and professional in the discharge of their duties.
He also directed the command to strengthen community engagement and intelligence gathering, emphasising the importance of promptly transmitting credible information that could help prevent attacks to the relevant operational authorities.
Disu commended personnel of the command for their sacrifices and continued efforts to protect lives and property across the state.
State Police
On the proposed establishment of state police, the IGP said the initiative would not disrupt ongoing security operations.
Rather, he said, state police could complement existing efforts and strengthen the capacity and efficiency of security personnel in carrying out their responsibilities.
