Matthias Jaissle has been appointed as Eddie Howe’s successor at Newcastle United.
While the German coach may not yet be a household name, his impressive rise through the ranks in Austria and Saudi Arabia has earned him the opportunity to lead the Magpies at St James’ Park.
The 38-year-old began his football career with Hoffenheim before transitioning into coaching. His journey took him to Denmark before he joined the Red Bull Salzburg academy, where he quickly established himself as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches.
Jaissle’s first senior managerial role came with FC Liefering, and in the summer of 2021, he was promoted to head coach of Red Bull Salzburg. He enjoyed immediate success, guiding the club to a league and cup double in his debut season before retaining the Austrian Bundesliga title the following year.
During his time at Salzburg, Jaissle helped develop talented youngsters such as Karim Adeyemi and Benjamin Šeško, while also leading the club in the UEFA Champions League.
In 2023, he moved to Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, where he has spent the past three years. His achievements in the Gulf include winning the Saudi Super Cup in Hong Kong last year.
