President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has resigned from office, announcing his decision at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.
According to the Super Eagles news account on X, @SSE_NGA, Gusau was joined by members of the NFF Executive Committee in stepping down from their positions.
The development follows a difficult period for Nigerian football, highlighted by the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup — the first such occurrence in the country’s history — after a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the play-off.
The Falcons had earlier exited the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage following a defeat to Cameroon, while the Super Eagles also failed to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The NFF has also faced scrutiny over its management of a ₦17 billion Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024. A fact-finding committee had further alleged that some board members and officials influenced national team selections and invitations for financial benefit.
Gusau’s resignation comes just weeks before the NFF elective congress, scheduled to hold on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
