The United Kingdom has advised its citizens against all travel to parts of 11 Nigerian states and warned against all but essential travel to parts of 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The latest advisory was published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
According to the updated travel advice, the FCDO advised against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states in the North-East.
In the North-West, Katsina and Zamfara states were also placed under an all-travel ban.
The advisory further covered riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states in the South-South.
The FCDO defined the affected riverine locations as “the river and swamp locations accessible by boat, but not by road.”
Areas Where UK Advises Against All But Essential Travel
The UK government advised against all but essential travel to Bauchi State in the North-East.
In the North-West, the advisory covers Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states.
In the North-Central region, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue states were also listed.
The advisory extends to the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja.
In the South-East and South-South, the FCDO advised against all but essential travel to Abia, Anambra and Imo states, as well as the non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states.
The FCDO cautioned that “No travel can be guaranteed safe” and urged people planning trips to Nigeria to read its travel advice before departure.
It also advised travellers to research their destinations and obtain appropriate travel insurance.
The UK government warned that travel insurance could become invalid if travellers ignored FCDO advice.
The latest update also includes information on IVF, fertility treatment scams and overseas adoption, alongside guidance on entry requirements, safety and security, regional risks, health and accessing assistance in Nigeria.
The FCDO advised travellers to ensure their insurance covers their entire itinerary, planned activities and potential emergency expenses.
