The University of Ibadan has emerged as the highest-ranked Nigerian university in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, with the University of Lagos taking second place nationally.
According to the July 2026 ranking data, a total of 32,148 universities and higher education institutions were assessed globally.
The University of Ibadan ranked 1,291st in the world and first in Nigeria, while the University of Lagos placed 1,355th globally and second nationally.
The University of Nigeria ranked third in Nigeria and 1,397th globally, followed by Covenant University, Ota, which placed fourth nationally and 1,522nd worldwide.
The Webometrics Ranking is published twice a year and evaluates higher education institutions based on indicators such as visibility, openness and excellence. The ranking measures factors including digital presence, accessibility of scholarly resources and research impact.

American institutions accounted for seven of the top 10 positions, while the United Kingdom had two universities in the top four.
Harvard retained the number-one position, ahead of Stanford, while Oxford and Cambridge occupied third and fourth places respectively. MIT completed the global top five.
The University of Toronto was the highest-ranked Canadian institution, placing 12th globally.
Harvard’s continued dominance was attributed to its strong performance across the ranking’s web-based indicators, which assess institutions’ online visibility, openness and research-related impact.
The July 2026 edition therefore places the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos at the top of Nigeria’s university rankings. However, Nigeria’s leading institution, UI, remains outside the global top 1,000 in this particular Webometrics ranking.
