The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a climate-smart building code as part of efforts to promote sustainable infrastructure, improve energy efficiency and strengthen resilience against the effects of climate change.
The initiative was unveiled by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, which said the proposed code would provide standards for the design, construction and maintenance of buildings capable of withstanding climate-related challenges while reducing environmental impact.
According to the ministry, the climate-smart building code will encourage the use of energy-efficient technologies, environmentally friendly construction materials and climate-resilient designs in both public and private sector projects.
The ministry noted that the framework forms part of the government’s broader commitment to sustainable urban development and the implementation of climate adaptation strategies across the country.
Officials said the new code is expected to improve the quality and durability of buildings, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the construction sector and lower long-term energy costs for occupants.
The Federal Government also stressed the importance of collaboration with professional bodies, developers, architects, engineers and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative.
The ministry added that awareness campaigns and capacity-building programmes would be rolled out to support compliance and encourage the adoption of climate-smart construction practices nationwide.
It reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building safer, greener and more sustainable communities while advancing Nigeria’s climate goals and supporting economic development through resilient infrastructure.
