The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ending terrorism and banditry across the country.
Akume gave the assurance on Friday in Abuja during a Peace and Security Summit Award, where he said the government was more determined than ever to tackle insecurity.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the SGF, Mr Aminu Yar’Gaya, the SGF urged the media to support government efforts through balanced and responsible reporting.
He stressed the need for journalists to present a fair account of security challenges while also recognising the efforts of the military, security agencies and victims affected by attacks.
“We are concerned about the reportage of banditry and terrorism in the country. We are not saying attacks should not be reported, but all sides should be reflected.
“Stories of terrorism should be reported fairly, including the efforts of our gallant military and the experiences of victims.
“Government is doing a lot in the fight against terrorism and banditry, and we are determined to do more,” Akume said.
The convener of the summit, Ms Jennifer Serrano, said the event was timely given the country’s ongoing security challenges.
She called on Nigerians to unite and support government initiatives aimed at ending terrorism and banditry, stressing that collective action was necessary to achieve lasting peace.
The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Rep. Benson Babajimi, said the legislature remained committed to partnerships that would strengthen national laws, promote unity and ensure sustainable peace.
Babajimi, who was represented by his deputy, Rep. Ahmad Kalambaina, described the summit as important at a time when the nation was facing growing security and social concerns.
“In our society, peace and security are not just words; they are the foundation of unity. Without peace, our laws and policies cannot function effectively.
“As lawmakers responsible for creating laws that protect citizens, we must build a country where everyone feels safe in their homes and communities.
“Hosting this summit shows the recognition that the primary responsibility of government is to maintain law and order. By government, I mean the executive, legislature and judiciary,” he said.
The lawmaker added that the summit represented an important step in ongoing engagements with stakeholders on national security concerns.
He noted that effective security depends not only on the efforts of security agencies but also on citizens’ awareness, cooperation and relationship with those responsible for maintaining peace.
According to him, increased commitment to security and crime prevention has become necessary due to the country’s current security challenges.
