The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has reported a minor fire outbreak at the Idu Train Station in Abuja, attributing the incident to an electrical fault.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in the station’s low-voltage electrical room, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu.
The fire was detected at about 8:30 p.m. and was quickly brought under control by maintenance personnel, the corporation said.
A preliminary inspection revealed that some electrical supply cables connected to the station’s control panels were damaged in the incident.
The NRC, however, said the station’s alternative solar power system was not affected by the fire.
It added that power had been temporarily restored to the lifts and escalators, with 28 of the 29 facilities currently operational.
Abuja-Kaduna Train Services Unaffected
The corporation assured passengers that the incident would not affect operations on the Abuja-Kaduna rail route.
According to the NRC, scheduled Abuja-Kaduna train services will continue as normal despite the electrical fault at the station.
The corporation said its technical team was carrying out a further assessment to establish the exact cause of the fault and ensure the permanent restoration of the affected installations.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has also been notified and is expected to provide the necessary technical support and intervention.
