Nigeria’s athletics team enjoyed a memorable day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as Goodness Nwachukwu shattered her own world record to win gold, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed a historic title in the men’s shot put, and Tobi Amusan battled injury to secure bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Nwachukwu stole the spotlight in the women’s F42 discus throw, producing a world-record throw of 39.66 metres on her final attempt to successfully defend the Commonwealth title she won in Birmingham four years ago.
The 27-year-old para-athlete improved her previous world record by more than three metres, setting her fourth career world record and adding another Commonwealth gold medal to her growing collection.
She dominated the competition from start to finish, with Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye taking silver after a throw of 38.52 metres, while Bree Cronin claimed bronze with 36.00 metres.
An emotional Nwachukwu celebrated the achievement with excitement after the event.
“I feel like I am on top of the world. I feel so great. I feel so wow. I was like, ‘Ah, what?’ and I started shouting,” she said.
She also thanked Nigerians for their support, saying: “I love you all and I can’t wait to see you. Love you.”
Nigeria’s success continued in the field events as Enekwechi became the first Nigerian to win Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s shot put.
The African record holder produced a winning throw of 21.07 metres at Scotstoun Stadium, improving on the silver medal he won at the 2018 Games and making up for his fourth-place finish at Birmingham 2022.
The 33-year-old sealed victory with his penultimate attempt, overtaking defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand, whose opening throw of 21.03 metres had kept him in the lead for much of the contest. Walsh settled for silver, while England’s Scott Lincoln claimed bronze with a best throw of 20.99 metres.
The triumph further cemented Enekwechi’s reputation as one of Africa’s finest shot put athletes. A five-time African champion, he remains the continent’s record holder in the event.
In the women’s 100m hurdles, world record holder Tobi Amusan displayed grit and determination to extend her impressive Commonwealth Games medal streak despite carrying an injury.
Amusan clocked 12.60 seconds to finish third, earning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games medal. However, the bronze denied the Nigerian star a third successive Commonwealth title.
The 29-year-old later revealed that she had competed with a knee injury sustained during Team Nigeria’s training camp in Aberdeen.
The performances of Nwachukwu, Enekwechi and Amusan capped another successful outing for Team Nigeria, with the trio delivering medals, a world record and a historic first to boost the country’s athletics campaign at Glasgow 2026.
