The value of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) transactions in Nigeria rose by 208.4 per cent year-on-year to N89.12 trillion in 2025, compared with N29.12 trillion recorded in 2024.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in its 2025 Annual Report, attributed the significant increase to changing consumer preferences, wider adoption of digital payment channels, growth in e-commerce and improvements in payment infrastructure.

Reviewing retail payment activities during the period, the apex bank said the volume of electronic payment transactions increased by 2.62 per cent to 47.88 billion in 2025 from 46.65 billion in 2024.

The value of electronic transactions also recorded substantial growth, rising by 26.07 per cent to N4,360.33 trillion from N3,458.77 trillion in the previous year.

The CBN said ATM transactions recorded the highest growth among payment channels, with transaction volume increasing by 61.94 per cent to 1.66 billion.

This was followed by a 20.89 per cent rise in transactions conducted through Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), which increased to 669.55 million, while Point of Sale (PoS) transactions grew by 19.78 per cent to 15.66 billion.

However, the bank noted declines in transaction volumes through mobile applications, internet/web platforms and direct debit channels.

Despite the overall growth in electronic payments, the CBN identified several risks confronting the payments ecosystem in 2025, including systemic vulnerabilities, the dominance of a few systemically important payment service providers (SIPS), fraud-related losses, cyber threats and the activities of unlicensed operators.

The apex bank said addressing these challenges remained critical to maintaining a secure, resilient and efficient digital payments system.
