Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 65 Battalion have intercepted a truck allegedly transporting a large quantity of illicit drugs along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and arrested the driver.
The operation, carried out on July 9, 2026, followed an intelligence-led intervention after troops received credible information about the movement of the illegal consignment.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya, said preliminary investigations showed that the drugs were being conveyed to the Berger area of Lagos State.
The statement read: “Preliminary investigations revealed that the illicit consignment was being transported to the Berger general area of Lagos State. However, the suspect could not provide satisfactory information regarding the ownership or intended recipient of the drugs.”
The Army said the suspect and the recovered substances were subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Lagos State Command, for further investigation and possible prosecution in line with established procedures.
The handover was conducted by the Commanding Officer of the 65 Battalion, Lt. Col. S. Adeojo.
Commending the troops for the successful operation, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Maj. Gen. Adebayo Babalola, praised their alertness, professionalism and effectiveness in carrying out their duties.
He urged personnel to maintain the tempo of ongoing operations and intensify efforts to prevent drug traffickers and other criminal groups from operating within the division’s area of responsibility.
The Army said the operation highlights its continued partnership with relevant security agencies in the fight against drug trafficking and other criminal activities.
