The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against the importation, sale and consumption of two banned alcoholic energy drinks recently confiscated by Ghanaian authorities.
The warning was contained in Public Alert No. 032/2026, published on NAFDAC’s official X account on Friday.
According to the agency, the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority seized about 140 boxes of the products during a regulatory enforcement operation in the Upper East Region of the country.
The affected products are Bel Ice Vodka Energy Drink and Cody’s Vody Energy Mix.
NAFDAC explained that the beverages had previously been prohibited from sale and distribution due to the health risks associated with combining alcohol and stimulant ingredients commonly found in energy drinks.
“The products had previously been prohibited from sale and distribution because of the potential health risks associated with the combination of alcohol and stimulants commonly found in energy drinks,” the agency stated.
The regulator warned that alcoholic energy drinks can create a false sense of sobriety, as the stimulant content may mask the effects of alcohol intoxication, increasing the likelihood of excessive drinking and risky behaviour.
According to NAFDAC, young adults and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the dangers posed by such beverages, including impaired judgment and coordination, cardiovascular complications, dehydration, sleep disorders, and a higher risk of alcohol-related injuries and accidents.
The agency urged importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers to ensure the affected products are neither imported into nor distributed, marketed or sold anywhere in Nigeria.
It also advised beverage dealers to verify that all products offered for sale comply with NAFDAC’s registration and regulatory requirements.
NAFDAC further appealed to members of the public to report any suspected presence of the products in Nigeria’s supply chain to the nearest NAFDAC office.
“Consumers are encouraged to report any sightings of the products or any adverse events associated with their consumption to the nearest NAFDAC office or through the e-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website,” the agency said.
