The Transmission Company of Nigeria has handed over a temporary National Control Centre in Abuja to the Nigerian Independent System Operator to enhance electricity grid management and improve system reliability.
The facility, located at the Gwagwalada 330kV Transmission Substation, is equipped with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS) and telecommunications infrastructure for real-time monitoring and operation of the national grid.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.
According to the statement, the temporary control centre was officially handed over on June 30 and will serve as NISO’s operational headquarters pending the completion of the permanent National Control Centre in Gwagwalada.
Speaking during the ceremony, TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sule Abdulaziz, represented by the General Manager, Project Coordination, Amini Tahir, described the handover as a significant milestone in efforts to modernise Nigeria’s electricity transmission network.
He said the facility was specifically developed to accommodate the newly deployed SCADA/EMS and telecommunications systems alongside operational personnel responsible for monitoring the national grid.
Abdulaziz noted that the temporary control centre would enable NISO to oversee grid operations more efficiently until the permanent National Control Centre becomes operational.
He added that NISO would assume responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the facility.
“This facility is central to improving grid management, enhancing system reliability and delivering better electricity services to Nigerians. Together, we are building the foundation for a more resilient and efficient national grid,” he said.
The TCN boss also acknowledged the World Bank for supporting the project and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to strengthening collaboration and driving innovation in the power sector.
In his remarks, NISO Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abdu Mohammed Bello, represented by the General Manager, System Planning, Kabir Adamu, described the handover as a crucial step towards boosting the operational efficiency of Nigeria’s power grid.
He said the availability of the SCADA/EMS control room would enable NISO to commence the operational deployment of the system, which is essential for effective grid management.
Bello assured stakeholders that NISO would manage the facility efficiently to support reliable and stable electricity transmission across the country.
Also speaking, TCN Project Manager, Samuel Fakinlade, said the equipment and personnel currently operating from the temporary control centre would be relocated to the permanent National Control Centre once construction is completed, after which the temporary facility would revert to TCN.
