The United Kingdom Government has reaffirmed that applicants using its standard passport service should expect to receive their British passports within three weeks, while urging travellers not to book trips until their new passports have been issued.

According to updated guidance published on the official UK government website, the three-week processing period begins only after HM Passport Office receives an applicant’s supporting documents, not from the date the online application is submitted.

The government noted that while most applications are completed within the stated timeframe, some may take longer if additional information is required or if the applicant is invited for an interview.

“You’ll usually get your passport within three weeks. It may take longer than three weeks if we need more information, or we need to interview you. We’ll tell you this within three weeks,” the guidance stated.

HM Passport Office said applicants would be informed within the initial three-week period if their application requires extra checks.

The processing timeline applies to passport applications submitted from within the UK, while applications made from overseas may have different processing times.

The government encouraged applicants to use the online application system, describing it as the most affordable option. Those who opt for paper applications through a Post Office will pay an additional fee of £16.

Applicants requiring their passports urgently can use the Online Premium Service or the one-week Fast Track service, depending on their circumstances.

The government also advised individuals facing emergencies—such as a serious illness, the death of a close relative or friend, or urgent government-related travel—to contact the Passport Adviceline for assistance.

Applicants who have already submitted their documents can monitor the progress of their applications through the official passport tracking service.

The UK Government further warned travellers against making travel arrangements before receiving their new passports, noting that replacement passports are issued with new passport numbers, which could affect existing travel bookings.
