Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola would be interested in becoming England’s next head coach if the position becomes available, according to reports.

Guardiola stepped down as Manchester City boss at the end of the season, saying the club needed “new energy” after his decade-long spell in charge. Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has since taken over at the Etihad.

Explaining his decision to leave, Guardiola said it was the right time for both himself and the club to begin a new chapter.

“Ten years is a long time and I think the club needs a new manager, new energy and these incredible players need to start writing another chapter,” he said.

“I don’t think I would have the energy required to compete every three days and fight for titles. After 10 years, it’s good to change. Different faces are good for everyone. If I didn’t believe that, I would have stayed, but I think this is the perfect moment.”

The Spaniard had been linked with the vacant Italy coaching job following the Azzurri’s failure to qualify for the World Cup. However, reports indicate he declined the opportunity.

Journalist Ben Jacobs reported that Guardiola’s decision was influenced by family considerations rather than financial reasons.

“Pep Guardiola has turned down the chance to manage Italy. Decision down to family rather than financial reasons,” Jacobs posted on X.

Meanwhile, speculation over the future of England manager Thomas Tuchel has continued following criticism of his tactical approach in the Three Lions’ recent match against Argentina.

Although Tuchel has generally enjoyed the support of England fans, his side’s defensive approach after taking the lead sparked debate over his long-term future.

Amid the speculation, reports claim Guardiola would be willing to take charge of England should the Football Association decide to part ways with Tuchel.

An X account, which describes itself as being run by “five elite reporters,” claimed Guardiola would be keen to accept the role if the opportunity arises.

However, neither the Football Association nor Guardiola has publicly commented on the reports.
