South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has attributed Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup exit to Canada’s superior physicality, saying his side lacked the power and pace needed to compete with the tournament co-hosts.
Broos made the remarks after South Africa suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Canada in their last-32 clash in Los Angeles on Sunday.
According to the 74-year-old Belgian, modern football demands more than technical ability.
“I have said many times that modern football is more than just technique. There is power and speed, and we do not have it in our team yet. Canada had those qualities,” Broos said, according to AFP.
South Africa’s World Cup campaign came to an end when Stephen Eustaquio struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner in the 92nd minute to send Canada into the round of 16.
Broos Reconsiders Retirement
Before the tournament, Broos had announced that he intended to retire from coaching after South Africa’s World Cup campaign, ending a managerial career spanning more than three decades.
“I want to spend more time with my wife, children and grandchildren,” he told AFP in a pre-World Cup interview.
However, following Sunday’s defeat, the veteran coach suggested he may delay making a final decision on his future.
“It is not clever to make decisions when you are disappointed, so I will not do it here,” Broos said during his post-match press conference.
Reports within the South African Football Association indicate the experienced tactician could remain with the national team in another capacity if he steps down as head coach.
A football association source said Broos could either continue in charge or take up a scouting role focused on monitoring South African players based in Europe.
Since taking over in 2021, Broos has been widely credited with transforming the fortunes of Bafana Bafana.
Under his leadership, South Africa qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years and reached the knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history.
His tenure also sparked renewed public interest in the national team. While fewer than 200 spectators attended a friendly against Botswana shortly after his appointment, a World Cup warm-up match against Panama in Cape Town drew a capacity crowd of 50,000 supporters.
Broos also guided South Africa to a landmark Group A victory over South Korea, helping the team progress beyond the group stage for the first time after three previous first-round exits.
While South Africa bow out of the tournament, Canada will face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the round of 16 in Houston.
Bafana Bafana’s attention will now turn to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where they have been drawn in Group D alongside Kenya, Guinea and Eritrea.
