Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed reports claiming she has filed for divorce, describing them as false and misleading.
In a statement shared on her verified X account on Friday, Okwu-Kanu said she had been made aware of online reports alleging that she had initiated divorce proceedings against her husband, insisting that the claims were entirely untrue.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she stated.
She expressed disappointment over what she described as the continued circulation of unverified stories about her family, saying such reports were fabricated and undermined responsible journalism.
Okwu-Kanu urged the public to rely only on information released directly by her or her authorised representatives, while thanking those who sought clarification before sharing the reports.
She and Nnamdi Kanu were married in 2009.
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre after he was convicted on terrorism-related charges by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025.
The IPOB leader was found guilty on all seven counts in the charge and sentenced to life imprisonment on five counts, 20 years on one count and five years on another, with all sentences ordered to run concurrently.
He has since appealed the judgment. On February 4, 2026, Kanu filed a notice of appeal seeking to overturn both his conviction and sentence.
