Roberto Martinez has announced his departure as Portugal’s head coach following the national team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 52-year-old Spaniard confirmed after Portugal’s 1-0 Round of 16 defeat to Spain on Monday that the match marked the end of his tenure, with Mikel Merino scoring the decisive late goal at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium.
Martinez, who was appointed Portugal manager in 2023, leaves after a spell that was often overshadowed by criticism over his continued reliance on veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo, despite growing debate about the striker’s role in the national team.
Before taking charge of Portugal, Martinez managed Swansea City, Wigan Athletic and Everton in England before spending six years as Belgium’s national team coach.
His departure had been widely expected, with his contract due to expire at the conclusion of the World Cup.
Confirming his exit, Martinez expressed gratitude to the Portuguese people for their support throughout his time in charge.
“It is true that this was my last game as coach of the Portugal national team,” he said.
“I want to thank the Portuguese people because it has been an incredible journey and an honour that is difficult to put into words.
“The support, strength and energy we received from the fans and everyone in Portugal were extraordinary.
“Thank you for everything. I will carry these memories with me for the rest of my life.”
