Hon. Kolawole Lawal Mobolorunduro, Ph.D., has urged Nigerians to embrace June 12 as a symbol of national unity, noting that it provides a unique platform to celebrate democracy in the country.
Hon. Lawal, in a statement released on Friday, said the June 12, 1993 presidential election remains remarkable because it transcended regional, ethnic, and religious divisions.
He noted that a candidate from the southern part of the country received overwhelming support across the nation, demonstrating that Nigerians can unite behind a common vision capable of transforming the country’s fortunes.
Dr. Lawal, who represented Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency in the 9th National Assembly (2019–2023), stated that the June 12 presidential election remains a reference point in Nigeria’s political history, as it is widely regarded as the freest and fairest election ever conducted in the country.
According to him, the election remains one of the most celebrated electoral exercises in Nigeria’s history and continues to inspire faith in democratic governance.
He therefore urged Nigerians to sustain the spirit of June 12 by embracing unity, promoting togetherness, and upholding the principles of enduring democracy.
June 12 is celebrated annually as Nigeria’s Democracy Day and observed as a national public holiday. It commemorates the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election and honours the sacrifices of citizens who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in the country.
