A 43-year-old British-Nigerian businessman and social media influencer, Igho Ubiribo, has died after undergoing a penile enlargement procedure while on holiday in Thailand with his wife.
Ubiribo died in March after receiving an injection containing 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine at a clinic in Bangkok, an inquest at Inner West London Coroners’ Court heard last month.
According to the Daily Mail, Ubiribo began experiencing chest pain and twice lost consciousness while receiving a massage with his wife, Danielle Simba Allen, shortly after the procedure.
He was rushed by ambulance to Sukhumvit Hospital, where doctors diagnosed a pulmonary embolism, a potentially fatal condition in which a blood clot blocks a blood vessel in the lungs.
Ubiribo later lost consciousness before doctors could carry out a recommended CT scan.
Medical staff reportedly attempted to resuscitate him for more than 100 minutes, but he died in the early hours of March 6.
A postmortem examination conducted in the UK found cellular material in Ubiribo’s lungs that matched the hyaluronic acid used in the penile filler injection, supporting the diagnosis of a pulmonary embolism.
Coroner Jean Harkin concluded that Ubiribo died “as the result of a cosmetic procedure abroad”. His cause of death was recorded as a pulmonary embolism resulting from the injection of hyaluronic acid into his penis.
Ubiribo, who reportedly had about 185,000 followers on Instagram, was buried in London in May. The funeral was attended by Nigerian music star Davido and other prominent figures, according to the Daily Mail.
Medical professionals have previously warned about potential complications associated with penile filler procedures.
Professor Vaibhav Modgil, an NHS andrology specialist and consultant urological surgeon, said such procedures could have serious and potentially devastating consequences for patients.
