Premier League fans will have greater access to referees’ and VAR officials’ explanations this season as the league introduces expanded communication around key decisions.
The Premier League and professional referees’ body Pro Ref said the initiative is designed to give supporters a clearer understanding of how and why major decisions are reached during matches.
Under the new system, the Premier League Match Centre will publish direct quotes from referees and VAR officials in selected incidents where their explanations can provide greater clarity.
The published information may include the referee’s initial decision on the pitch, as well as the VAR’s explanation for choosing not to intervene or recommending an on-field review.
The updates will be shared through the Premier League Match Centre account on X and, for the first time, on a dedicated section of the league’s website and app, which will be updated after each round of fixtures.
The league is also expanding the use of Ref Cam, which provides footage from the referee’s perspective during matches.
While selected Ref Cam video clips were made available during matches last season, the new system will also include audio from certain incidents.
However, the audio will only be available for matches featuring Ref Cam, which is expected to cover approximately one or two games per match round. Only selected incidents will be featured.
The Premier League clarified that the initiative will not include live VAR audio, in accordance with restrictions set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).
Another major change will see the weekly findings of the Key Match Incident (KMI) Panel published on the Premier League website and app from the 2026/27 season.
Introduced in the 2022/23 campaign, the independent KMI Panel reviews significant refereeing decisions as part of the assessment of match officials’ performances.
Its reviews cover major incidents such as penalties, red cards, offside decisions and other key calls within the referee’s jurisdiction.
The panel consists of three former players or coaches, alongside representatives from the Premier League and Pro Ref. Each decision is assessed as either correct or incorrect according to the panel’s judgement.
The Premier League said publishing the findings would provide supporters with greater transparency over how major refereeing decisions are evaluated.
Meanwhile, Pro Ref Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb will continue to present the “Match Officials Mic’d Up” programme, which is distributed through Premier League broadcast partners.
The programme features full on-field and VAR audio surrounding selected incidents, accompanied by Webb’s analysis and explanation of the decisions.
