Team Nigeria delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, finishing seventh on the final medals table with a total of 24 medals.
The Nigerian contingent won 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals to emerge as the highest-ranked African nation at the Games and secure a place among the top 10 countries overall.
The final standings were confirmed on the official Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games X account following the conclusion of competition on Sunday.
Nigeria’s gold medal campaign was led by Esther Nworgu, who claimed the country’s first gold in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event.
Other standout performances came from Ezekiel Nathaniel, who won the men’s 400m hurdles title; Goodness Nwachukwu, who broke her own world record to win gold in the women’s F42 discus throw; Idris Riluwan, who triumphed in the men’s para powerlifting event; and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who made history with his victory in the men’s shot put.
Despite battling injury, Tobi Amusan added to Nigeria’s medal haul by winning bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Australia dominated the Games, topping the medals table with 171 medals comprising 70 gold, 45 silver and 56 bronze. England finished second with 110 medals (29 gold, 45 silver and 36 bronze), while Canada placed third with 62 medals, including 19 gold, 20 silver and 23 bronze.
India and hosts Scotland completed the top five with 39 medals each, with India taking fourth place by virtue of a higher silver medal count. New Zealand finished sixth with 36 medals (10 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze), just ahead of Nigeria.
Nigeria’s haul of 10 gold medals ensured it finished above every other African nation, underlining one of its strongest Commonwealth Games campaigns in recent years.
Jamaica finished eighth with 19 medals, Wales placed ninth with 31 medals, and Malaysia completed the top 10 with 16 medals.
South Africa ended the Games in 11th place with 28 medals (seven gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze), while Northern Ireland finished 12th with 16 medals (three gold, four silver and nine bronze). Kenya placed 13th with 12 medals comprising three gold, four silver and five bronze, while Cyprus ranked 14th after winning one gold, five silver and six bronze medals.
Mauritius finished 15th with four medals, while Cameroon placed 16th with five medals.
Jersey, Samoa and Sri Lanka shared 17th place after each won one gold and one silver medal, while Fiji rounded out the top 20 with one gold and one bronze medal.
Among the remaining African nations, Uganda finished 27th with three medals, Namibia placed 29th with three medals, and Ghana ended 30th with two medals. Lesotho and Zambia each concluded their campaigns with two bronze medals, while Gabon secured one bronze medal to feature on the final medals table.
