The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that every valid vote cast in the 2027 general elections will count.
Amupitan gave the assurance on Friday during a courtesy visit to former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), at his residence in Minna, Niger State.
The INEC chairman led a delegation comprising National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors and his technical aides.
Describing Abdulsalami as “the father of democracy in Nigeria,” Amupitan said the former military leader’s successful transition to civilian rule in 1999 laid the foundation for the country’s democratic journey.
He noted that the electoral commission regarded Abdulsalami not only as a respected statesman but also as a steadfast supporter of INEC.
Amupitan also praised the former Head of State’s leadership of the National Peace Committee, saying its Peace Accord initiative had encouraged political actors to embrace non-violence and strengthened Nigeria’s democratic process.
According to him, the initiative has provided a platform for political parties and candidates to commit themselves to peaceful elections, thereby reinforcing the sovereignty of the Nigerian people.
He described the visit as “a pilgrimage of appreciation” in recognition of Abdulsalami’s contributions to peaceful coexistence, credible elections and democratic stability, while also congratulating him on his recent 84th birthday.
The INEC chairman reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting credible elections despite the challenges it faces.
“The Commission’s determination under my leadership is to ensure that ordinary Nigerians go out to vote with the confidence that their votes will be counted and reflected in the final outcome of the elections,” he said, adding that this remained INEC’s foremost obligation to the electorate.
Amupitan also formally announced the timetable for the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
In his remarks, Abdulsalami called on Nigerians to support INEC and work collectively towards ensuring peaceful, credible and successful elections in 2027.
