The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that high blood pressure remains a “silent threat” capable of causing severe damage to vital organs without noticeable symptoms, urging people to check their blood pressure regularly and maintain healthy levels below 140/90 mmHg.
The global health agency gave the advice in a health advisory posted on its verified X account on Tuesday, stressing that early detection and routine monitoring are essential to reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney damage and other serious complications associated with hypertension.
According to the WHO, high blood pressure often develops without warning signs, allowing it to quietly damage the heart, brain, kidneys and blood vessels over time.
The organisation urged individuals to monitor their blood pressure consistently, keep track of their readings and take prompt action when abnormalities are detected.
“The sooner you know your numbers, the sooner you can take steps to protect your health. Know your numbers. Take control. Stay healthy. Taking action today can help prevent serious health problems tomorrow,” the advisory stated.
Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is one of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular diseases globally.
Medical experts describe the condition as a “silent killer” because many people live with it for years without experiencing symptoms, even as it gradually damages critical organs.
Health professionals recommend regular blood pressure screening, reducing salt intake, eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding tobacco use, limiting alcohol consumption and adhering to prescribed medications where necessary as effective measures for preventing and controlling hypertension.
The WHO has consistently urged governments and health authorities to expand public awareness campaigns and improve access to blood pressure screening services, noting that early diagnosis and proper management are key to reducing deaths and disabilities caused by cardiovascular diseases.
