United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on governments, institutions and individuals around the world to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy by taking decisive action to tackle poverty, reduce inequality and build more inclusive societies.
In his message marking Nelson Mandela International Day, Guterres described the late South African statesman as “a towering figure of peace, reconciliation, justice and human rights.”
Observed annually on July 18, Mandela’s birthday, the international day celebrates the life and legacy of the anti-apartheid icon and former South African president.
According to the United Nations, the day serves as a global call to action, encouraging people to dedicate 67 minutes to community service in recognition of the 67 years Mandela devoted to the struggle for social justice.
The theme for this year’s commemoration is “It’s Still in Our Hands to Combat Poverty and Inequity.”
Highlighting the theme, Guterres said Mandela was not only a champion of justice and equality but also a steadfast advocate for ending poverty.
“He knew that ending poverty is not an act of charity. It is an act of justice. And a duty that belongs to us all,” he said.
The UN chief warned that inequality continues to widen globally, with wealth increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few while millions struggle to meet their basic needs.
“We live in a world where inequality is becoming entrenched, where wealth accrues disproportionately for a lucky few while many struggle to afford basic needs like food, water, shelter and education.
“And where years of progress in fighting poverty have been stalled by conflict, economic shocks and climate disasters,” he said.
Guterres urged governments to build fairer economies and more inclusive societies by investing in decent jobs, universal healthcare, quality education and stronger social protection systems.
He also called for greater financial support for developing countries, reforms to the global financial architecture and debt relief to help nations achieve sustainable development.
The Secretary-General further advocated a transition to renewable energy, saying it would deliver benefits for both people and the planet.
Reflecting on Mandela’s enduring legacy, Guterres said he remained inspired by the late leader’s belief in the power of collective action.
“I have always been inspired by Madiba’s life and belief that when people stand together, nothing is impossible.
“The future is in our hands. Today and every day, let us carry forward Mandela’s vision of a just, inclusive, equal and peaceful world,” he said.
